Trump Calls for Arrests After U.N. Escalatorgate

By Miranda Jeyaretnam / September 25, 2025

Donald Trump said he was the victim of “sabotage” after an escalator at the United Nations stopped working the moment that he and his wife Melania stepped on, forcing the President to walk up one flight of steps.

“Not one, not two, but three very sinister events” occurred at the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York on Tuesday, Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday, also referencing an apparent issue with his teleprompter and the sound system when he spoke before the body. Footage of the escalator incident, which quickly circulated online, showed Trump looking around in confusion after the moving stairway jolted to a stop, before Melania in front of him walked up the escalator.

Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the U.N. Secretary-General, said that a White House videographer running backwards up the escalator ahead of Trump appeared to have “inadvertently triggered” the built-in stop safety mechanism at the top of the escalator. “The safety mechanism is designed to prevent people or objects accidentally being caught and stuck in or pulled into the gearing,” Dujarric said in a note to correspondents.

But the global body’s assurances have not been enough to quell conspiracy theories that sprung up on social media—and that have been perpetuated by the White House—that the malfunction was a deliberate attack by U.N. staffers on Trump.

Mad King Donald reveals what’s driving

his Portland obsession — and it’s just insane

By Robert Reich – Commentary

When over the weekend federal Judge Karin Immergut (a Trump appointee) blocked Trump from deploying Oregon’s National Guard to Portland, Trump said she “should be ashamed of herself” because “Portland is burning to the ground.”

Trump promptly ordered the California National Guard to Portland.

Apart from the obvious question of how Trump can so blatantly defy a federal judge, there’s a deeper puzzle here. Where did he get the idea Portland is burning to the ground?

Nine days ago, when Trump first threatened to send troops to Portland, Oregon’s governor, Tina Kotek, told him there was no reason.

“He thinks there are elements here creating an insurrection,” Kotek said after her call with Trump. “I told him there is no insurrection here and that we have this under control.”

Trump responded to Kotek this way:

“I said, ‘Well wait a minute, am I watching things on television that are different from what’s happening? … They are literally attacking and there are fires all over the place … it looks like terrible.”

Why the factual discrepancy between what Governor Kotek told Trump about Portland and what he believed was happening there?

In the suit seeking an injunction to stop Trump from sending troops to Portland, which Judge Immergut granted, the state of Oregon alleged that Trump relied on video clips from Portland protests over the murder of George Floyd that took place in 2020.

If a President Goes Rogue, What Does the Military Do?

As President Trump orders the Texas National Guard into Chicago, America stands poised on the brink of a constitutional crisis. With troops already stationed in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., critics charge that the president is wielding the military as a political weapon.

At the same time, Trump is reshaping the upper ranks of the armed forces, sidelining those who have challenged his authority. Authoritarianism and democracy look more finely balanced than at any time in living memory.

So, how far does presidential power truly extend when it comes to deploying soldiers on home soil? And to whom do America’s generals ultimately answer?

Investigating how crypto is making the Trumps

hundreds of millions | Four Corners Documentary

US President Donald Trump has long boasted of his wealth. Is he now using his office to enrich himself and his family?

The vast network of foreign deals, hotels and cryptocurrency that is business as usual for the Trumps is unlike anything the US has ever seen from a president.

The White House says Trump is abiding by the rules and stepped back from his business ventures while in office. But critics argue the way the President mixes business and politics threatens the very foundations of American democracy.

This week on Four Corners, the ABC’s Americas Editor John Lyons and a team of journalists interrogate just how this plethora of business activities have opened Trump up to accusations of profiting from the presidency, and conflicts of interest.

Lyons’ questions to Trump about his business deals were met with a rebuke that made headlines around the world. “Your leader is coming over to see me very soon. I’m going to tell him about you,” Trump warned Lyons.

The Last Days of the Pentagon Press Corps

I’ve been evicted from a building I’ve covered for 18 years. I’ll keep doing my job anyway.

By Nancy A. Youssef / October 15, 2025

THE FIRST PERSON I saw when I walked into the Pentagon for the final time was Jimmy. I don’t even know his last name, but I know his story. Before he started work at the labyrinthine headquarters of America’s armed forces, he was a medic with the Marines. For the past 21 years, he has been a building police officer and an unofficial, affable greeter. Jimmy only told me about his military career in 2021, the morning after 13 troops were killed in a suicide bombing at the entrance of the Kabul airport amid the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Everyone talked about the 11 Marines killed that day, but Jimmy remembered the one Navy corpsman among them, a medic who, like him, had been assigned to travel with the unit, just in case.

For nearly two decades, Jimmy stood guard beside two large mosaics showing the faces of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the September 11, 2001, attacks. The displays came down during the pandemic, a symbol of a nation that had moved on from the War on Terror and was beginning to focus on new threats. Last month, President Donald Trump told troops that the country’s adversary was “the enemy within.”

Nearly all of the Pentagon press corps is leaving the building this week, barred from working there under restrictions imposed by the Trump administration. My fellow journalists and I will continue to do our jobs, reporting on the U.S. military in every way we know how. But something is lost when the leadership of the Department of Defense chooses to close itself off to scrutiny in the way it has. On the most basic level, the public loses access to information it has a right to know, along with the right to ask questions of those entrusted with spending nearly $1 trillion from taxes and managing 3 million employees. But something intangible is lost too, including the privilege of meeting people like Jimmy, whose names may never appear in print but who are essential to how we understand the U.S. military. Before I had even crossed the vestibule to enter the building this morning, I was thinking about the stories I would no longer hear, the people I would never meet.

Russell Vought is one of the most powerful people in the Trump administration. For almost three decades, he worked in Congress and held prominent roles at conservative think tanks.

“Cold-Blooded Murder”: David Cole on Trump’s

Boat Attacks & CIA Covert Action in Venezuela

There are growing questions over the legality of U.S. strikes on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. “These are sitting ducks, and we are simply engaged in cold-blooded murder of individuals who may or may not be drug smugglers,” says David Cole, professor at the Georgetown University Law Center.

Cole says that President Trump is “committing homicide” by killing people without trial. “These individuals who have now been sent to the bottom of the sea by this president, if they were tried, at most, would face a sentence of some period of years,” says Cole. “There would be no death penalty authorized under the Constitution for these individuals, even assuming they’re guilty.”

This comes as Trump has authorized the CIA to carry out covert operations inside Venezuela aimed at regime change, raising fears of a military confrontation between the two countries.

President Trump held a lavish Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago Friday, just hours before an estimated 42 million people lost SNAP benefits across the country.

Kirk Curnutt, the executive director of the international F. Scott Fitzgerald Society, says that while “Gatsby is famous for its lavish party scenes, [what] people often miss is that the entire thrust of the book is to critique that conspicuous consumption and the wastage that goes on in these sorts of events.”

How Dick Cheney Worked to Expand Executive Power | Cheney’s Law (full documentary)

Following former Vice President Dick Cheney’s death at age 84, watch this 2007 documentary tracing the behind-closed-doors battle Cheney waged within the George W. Bush administration over the power of the presidency and the rule of law.

For three decades, Dick Cheney had been an advocate of granting the president virtually unlimited wartime power. In the aftermath of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, with Cheney as George W. Bush’s vice president, the Justice Department and the White House made a number of controversial legal decisions. Orchestrated by Cheney and his lawyer David Addington, the department interpreted executive power in an expansive and extraordinary way, granting Bush the power to detain, interrogate, torture, wiretap and spy — without congressional approval or judicial review.

In “Cheney’s Law,” a documentary by Michael Kirk and his team, FRONTLINE examined the battle over the power of the presidency and Cheney’s way of looking at the Constitution. As the White House and Congress faced off over executive privilege, the terrorist surveillance program, and the firing of U.S. attorneys, FRONTLINE told the story of what formed Cheney’s perspectives and what some at the time viewed as the most ambitious project to reshape the power of the president in American history.

Karoline Leavitt Is Sicker Than We Thought

The role of White House Press Secretary has always been one of public trust — a bridge between power and the people.

Today, that bridge looks more like a stage. Standing on it is Karoline Leavitt: 27 years old, former Trump campaign spokesperson, now the youngest press secretary in American history.

Her briefings are a study in confidence — and misinformation. She’s been fact-checked live on air, mocked for photoshopping her husband, and called “a stone-cold liar” by the House Minority Leader (The Daily Beast).

But behind the headlines lies a bigger question: how does someone with no background in journalism or governance end up as the nation’s chief communicator?

This is the story of how inexperience, ambition, and blind loyalty turned one young press secretary into the perfect mouthpiece for a post-truth presidency.

How Bribery Was LEGALIZED in America

Q: “Money and politics is the root of all evil in American politics today, right?”

A: “Your housing prices are unacceptably high. Your rent is unacceptably high. Your health care costs are unacceptably high because of corruption. Corruption is why the Congress and the government has not only not dealt with those problems, but is actually in many cases on the side of those who are creating those problems. It’s the money flowing into the system.”

David Sirota, editor-in-chief of The Lever, joins Mehdi Hasan to discuss his new book Master Plan: The Hidden Plot to Legalize Corruption in America. In Sirota’s book, he uncovers a hidden plan created by wealthy conservatives to make bribery a constitutionally-protected form of speech. The two also dive into the NYC mayoral debate, SCOTUS reform, and AIPAC.

Trump pardons Rudy Giuliani and others who

backed efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss

By Alanna Durkin Richer / November 10, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has pardoned his former personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, his onetime chief of staff Mark Meadows and others accused of backing the Republican’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The “full, complete, and unconditional” pardon for dozens of Trump allies are largely symbolic. It applies only to federal crimes, and none of the people named in the proclamation were ever charged federally over the bid to subvert the election won by Democrat Joe Biden. It doesn’t affect state charges, though state prosecutions stemming from the 2020 election have hit a dead end or are just limping along.

The move, however, underscores Trump’s continued efforts to promote the idea that the 2020 election was stolen from him even though courts around the country and Trump’s own attorney general at the time found no evidence of fraud that could have affected the outcome. Reviews, recounts and audits of the election in the battleground states where Trump contested his loss also affirmed Biden’s victory.

Trump’s recent action follows the sweeping pardons of the hundreds of Trump supporters charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, including those convicted of attacking law enforcement.

Ed Martin, the Department of Justice’s point-man on pardons and a former lawyer for Jan. 6 defendants, linked his announcement of the pardons to a post on X that read “No MAGA left behind.”
